In the early morning on Tuesday, Reggie L. Lovett Jr., 23, from Gainesville, was riding in a dark Suzuki westbound down Southwest Archer Road when he was stopped at a red light near Clark Butler Boulevard, striking an SUV, as per an accident report. The vehicle hit the driver's side of the door. Lovett was thrown off the motorcycle and killed at the scene, according to police. The owner of the motorbike, a former UF student, claimed his vehicle was stolen.
The accident on Tuesday wasn't the first time that his name was involved in the incident. The actor made headlines in 2018 when he was the assailant in the shoot-in incident in August 2017 that caused four teenagers to be injured during a high school football match against Buchholz and Eastside at Citizens Field. He was sentenced to prison for his involvement in the incident.
A few days before that shooting incident, Lovett was accused of firing a firearm toward a man before telling him, "This is not a game" and "I will kill you," according to court documents.
Lovett was initially accused of the attempted first-degree murder of four people. He admitted to firing an unloaded gun from his vehicle and the aggravated assault of a deadly armed weapon and received a sentence of 30 years in prison, per the court records. Credit for the time served records reveal Lovett has spent around 16 months in jail.
T'Yanna Robinson, Lovett's sister, said she recently saw an alteration in her brother's behavior. "He wasn't hanging around with the same group of people anymore. He wasn't the same as on the streets no more. He wasn't even trying to have a good time and wasn't even going into clubs."
Robinson claimed they had talked via phone one day before his passing. He spoke to her about an infant turtle he spotted in the backyard nicknamed "Uncle Pee Wee." According to her, Lovett was going to work at the time of the incident. She claimed he was hired by a local firm that was performing various tasks ranging from lawn care to painting and pressure cleaning.
Robinson stated that Lovett became engaged in the past year. She believes that the combination of his children together with his fiancée and family helped him transform.
She noted that he loved having time off on weekends with his four children, which include two girls and two boys. Robinson said he was settled and was following a pattern: to go to work, spend time with his family, and eat. "His favorite meal was chicken, creamed corn, and mashed potatoes. He would eat it every night," Robinson stated.
"I really believe he just wanted his freedom," she added. "He was fed up with having to go through the process. He was fed up placing himself in a box and being seen as an image." She added, "I would like him to be remembered as very loyal, sweet, and humble."
Five days before his demise, Lovett was issued a summons for breaching his probation in a case from 2021 where he pleaded guilty to domestic battery following the assault and threat to kill his son's mom. Along with 12 months of probation, Lovett was sentenced to 60 days in prison.
How Can a Car Accident Attorney Help You After an Accident?
After a car accident, you may feel overwhelmed and uncertain about what to do next. An experienced car accident lawyer, like those at the Port Richey-based law firm Nicoletti Law firm, can help guide you through the legal process and fight for the compensation you deserve.
Moreover, the lawyer will negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf to get you the maximum possible settlement. Insurance companies often try to lowball accident victims, but an experienced attorney will know how to stand up to them and fight for a fair settlement.
Your lawyer will take the matter to court if the insurance company refuses to offer a fair settlement. They will present the evidence and argue your case before a judge and jury. This is usually only necessary in cases with significant damage or injuries.
All the above being said, do thorough research to avoid hiring a bad lawyer.
