Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) has announced the opening of its $3.6 million, comprehensive cardiac catheterization lab, which will provide state-of-the-art interventional cardiology services to residents of Westchester, Putnam and Fairfield counties.
The cardiac cath lab, which will be open 24-hours a day, seven days a week, will provide diagnostic as well as interventional coronary angiography and stent placement for elective, urgent and emergency-level patients. The 1,709-square-foot facility is an extension of the nationally-renowned cardiac services program at Northwell Health’s Lenox Hill Hospital. It will serve as a regional center of excellence for interventional and procedural cardiac care. Patients will receive care from highly skilled interventional cardiologists, all extensively trained in high-risk cases.

As part of the new Seema Boesky Heart Center at Northern Westchester Hospital, it will bolster cardiac programs and services aimed at preventing, diagnosing and treating a full range of cardiovascular disease. These include community outreach and education, as well as medically monitored cardiac rehabilitation located at NWH’s Chappaqua Crossing campus. An electrophysiology lab is scheduled to open by the end of 2020.
“This is a milestone for cardiac care in our region, and for the health and well-being of our community,” said Derek Anderson, executive director of Northern Westchester Hospital. “Residents who previously had limited access to this life-saving care will no longer have to travel during cardiac events when every second is critical for the prevention of irreparable damage to the heart. This project would not have been possible without the support and generosity of Seema Boesky, whose gift is one of the largest in the hospital’s history and is the culmination of Seema’s 40-year relationship with Northern Westchester Hospital and her long-time interest in cardiac care.”

Carl Dietrich Reimers, MD, interventional cardiologist, who is Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at NWH as well as the Northwell Cardiology Service Line Director, Westchester County, vice chairman of cardiology at Lenox Hill Hospital, and assistant professor of Cardiology at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell noted, “Heart attacks result from blockages in blood vessels that carry oxygen and vital nutrients to the heart. When they last more than a few minutes, these blockages can cause permanent damage to the heart muscle and tissue. This new facility offers patients the gold standard of care, which in interventional cardiology means opening the artery within 90 minutes of first medical contact.”

According to Dr. Reimers, interventional cardiologists will work at both NWH and Lenox Hill, rotating through both hospitals to maintain the highest level of skill and quality. A. Garvey Rene, MD, FACC, FSCAI, of CareMount Medical will serve as associate director, and Pat Soriano, DNP, RN, MSN, APRN-BC, will manage the Center.
