Founders Collective Joins $4.3M Funding for PacketZoom

10/11/16

PacketZoom announced the appointment of tech industry veteran, Shlomi Gian as CEO. This company milestone comes on the heels of a $4.3M funding round led by existing investors to scale Packetzoom and support its growing roster of clientele, including mobile gaming industry leader, Glu Mobile.

Over the past three years Packetzoom has engineered a new way to accelerate content delivery that is two to three times faster than conventional methods. PacketZoom does this through several features that address roadblocks in how mobile data is transmitted through carrier and WiFi networks, commonly referred to as the mobile last mile.

Significantly, PacketZoom’s Mobile Expresslanes customize how apps perform over the mobile last mile based on key factors such as the user’s geographic location and type of mobile network. Through PacketZoom software-defined acceleration, mobile app publishers and developers can deliver a radically more responsive experience for their app users, a critical need across the mobile industry.

“I’m delighted to be joining the talented founding team at PacketZoom,” says Gian. “Chetan and team have built an industry leading product that is solving a crucial challenge mobile publishers and developers, such as Glu, face and that’s the user experience. If an app performs poorly users don’t blame the mobile network where 70% of latency resides, they just abandon the app. With PacketZoom technology mobile apps enjoy unprecedented speed and reliability and that translates into improved user retention and engagement for our customers.”

Shlomi Gian has over 20 years of experience in tech and has helped build mobile measurement and performance solutions at several companies. At Akamai, Gian co-founded the Emerging Mobile Business Unit and served as the Head of Mobile Market Development. Prior to Akamai, he was General Manager of Mobile Solutions at Cotendo before it was acquired by Akamai. Prior to Cotendo, he served as General Manager of Mobile services at Keynote Systems. Gian began his mobile career at DeviceAnywhere, which evangelized the real device based mobile testing and monitoring market and was acquired by Keynote Systems in 2012.

The current funding was led by First Round Capital, a firm specializing in supporting seed stage companies with strong technical founders, and Baseline Ventures which has invested in more than 80 companies. Additional investors include the Founders Collective and Tandem Capital. This new investment will help drive the company’s momentum in optimizing the mobile app user experience across several vertical markets including gaming, media, retail, and travel.

“PacketZoom has an opportunity to lead as a solutions provider to optimize mobile performance in a market that is continually focusing on mobile-first,” said Bill Trenchard of First Round Capital. “PacketZoom has revolutionized the content delivery approach to completely reimagine and improve the mobile user experience. The team continues to innovate and the addition of seasoned mobile leaders such as Shlomi Gian underscores the strength of the PacketZoom as a whole.”
