Columbia Now Occupies Two Full Floors at the 18-Story Plaza District Tower

Jack Resnick & Sons announced today that The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York is expanding its office space at 880 Third Avenue by 12,081 square feet, for a total of 23,558 square feet in the building.

Columbia, which leased the entire 2nd floor at 880 Third Avenue in 2009 to house its Department of Ophthalmology, will expand this practice and bring Dermatology and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery services to the entire 3rd floor of the property. The landlord will create a custom build-out for the tenant.

“We’re delighted that Columbia has chosen to grow with us and expand their medical offices at 880 Third Avenue,” said Dennis Brady, Executive Managing Director at Jack Resnick & Sons, who added the space benefits from “an outstanding location with easy access to Grand Central Terminal and several major subway lines.”

The lease renewal and expansion for Columbia follows a flurry of leasing activity at 880 Third Avenue. Earlier in the year, Jack Resnick & Sons completed approximately 36,000 square feet of lease renewals and expansions at the building, including deals for independent financial advisory firm QS Investors Holdings, LLC; private equity firm Culbro, LLC; strategic communications firm Stanton Public Relations & Marketing; and Fourth Wall Restaurants, LLC, the restaurant group behind such prominent upscale restaurants as Smith & Wollensky, Maloney & Porcelli, Quality Italian and Quality Meats.

Fran Delgorio and Dennis Brady of Jack Resnick & Sons represented the building owner in the long-term transaction. The tenant was represented by Columbia’s in-house real estate team. Asking office rents at the property are in the $60 per square foot range.

Located at the corner of East 53rd Street, the distinctive 18-story tower was built by Jack Resnick & Sons in 1962 and designed by Herbert Tannenbaum. Now a WiredScore Gold certified office property, 880 Third Avenue underwent a major renovation in 2009, highlighted by a double-height stone and glass lobby with two-story retail storefronts, a new aluminum façade cladding system, new insulated windows, new cooling tower and a modernized elevator system with new cabs.

According to Delgorio, only one floor of 12,081 square feet remains available. Other tenants at the building includeBevmax Office Centers, Jaffe Ross & Light LLP, Kanan Corbin Schupak and Aronow, Beech Hill Securities, Inc. and Fisher Harris Shapiro, Inc. Retail tenants include TD Bank, N.A., Pret a Manger and Crumbs Bake Shop.

A full service real estate organization, Jack Resnick & Sons has been an industry leader in development, construction, ownership and management since its founding in 1928. Its Manhattan portfolio currently includes approximately six million square feet of commercial office and retail space, including One Seaport Plaza, its signature office tower at 199 Water Street. It also has developed thousands of luxury residences and continues to own, manage and lease approximately 1,000 rental apartments.
