ACEC/MA Announces VHB as 2016 Winner of Two Bronze Engineering Excellence Awards

8/2/16

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named VHB as a winner of their 2016 Bronze Engineering Excellence Award for work on both the Logan Airport Sustainable Management Plan and the Memorial Avenue over US Route 5 projects, in East Boston and West Springfield, Massachusetts, respectively.

The 2016 Engineering Excellence Awards were announced at the recent ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala with emcees MA State Senator Karen Spilka and MA Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack.

VHB with offices in Boston, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island was retained by the Massachusetts Port Authority to lead a comprehensive effort to prepare a Sustainability Management Plan for Logan International Airport. VHB guided the Authority through a planning process that reached all Massport departments and developed a vision for a supportable facility that enhances environmental sustainability, improves the passenger experience and employee wellbeing, provides community benefits and focuses on financial feasibility.

VHB also took home a Bronze award for its work with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation on the replacement of two bridges carrying the Memorial Avenue Rotary over US Route 5 in West Springfield. Due to high traffic volumes and critical utilities carried by the bridges, accelerated bridge construction was completed in single 79-hour shutdowns, thereby minimizing traffic impacts and disruption to the traveling public. The project also included a series of multi-modal improvements to enhance the mobility and safety of the rotary for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.

“The winning projects exemplify ingenuity and professionalism and represent the breadth of engineering’s contribution to our everyday lives,” said ACEC/MA President David Vivilecchia. “They are outstanding examples of how engineers connect communities, provide safe and reliable water and energy, and make our buildings safe and efficient. The professional engineers and their colleagues at our member firms are dedicated to working on quality infrastructure, which wouldn’t otherwise exist. These outstanding projects are but a few examples of the quality work designed by Massachusetts and Rhode Island engineering firms.”
